During the first days of December of this year, the Twentieth Conference of the Parties of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change - COP20 / CMP10 will be held in Lima. Climate change is a problem that affects all economic activities; it affects both rich and developing countries, the latter being much more vulnerable, especially for being poorly prepared for disasters. The COP 20 is a challenge for Peru. Are we prepared to face the responsibility for climate change? What does it mean to hold us accountable for this environmental problem?

Peninsula Illescas Reserved Area
Ecoplayas
SERNANP
Ecoplayas, a Peruvian non-profit organization created in 1997, developed, according to its objectives, a project to expand the protected areas of the Peruvian coast. In 2000 they organized eight expeditions along the coast, conducted four consulting workshops and made multiple communal contacts, investigating areas in need of protection. In 2007 they submitted a technical file to the Peruvian State proposing the Illescas Peninsula, in Sechura (Piura), as a reserved area. In 2010, after four joint expeditions with officials from the National Service of Natural Protected Areas (SERNANP), approval was obtained and the Illescas Peninsula Reserved Area was created. Continuing its support to the Peruvian State, in January and February 2012 , Ecoplayas, commissioned by the Categorization Committee formed by the SERNANP, conducted a scientific study to assess biodiversity in this reserved area. In June 2012, the committee recommended its categorization as National Reserve. It was concluded that the reserved area is in a state of nature conservation, with SERNANP in charge of its revenue control. However, the presence in the territory of mining and oil concessions that may be exploited in the future is a threat. It is urgent to categorize it as a National Reserve and zone it indicating the areas of strict protection. The valuable natural landscape, the ecosystems and the species that inhabit it, make this reserve very valuable for scientific research and ecotourism activities, which may benefit the local communities. Due to its hydrobiological wealth, it will be important to study in the future the possibility of extending its boundaries to the marine space.

In this investigation, a dressing based on loche squash was developed. Initially, nine formulations ere designed, being acidified with acetic acid until reaching a pH of 4.4. Sensory analyses were performed in four sessions by an untrained panel which assessed the characteristics of the formulations: appearance, aroma and flavor, the formulation with the highest degree of satisfaction being determined through the Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) and the Least Significant Difference (LSD) tests. Then, the formulation of greater satisfaction was subjected to three different heat treatments: 85°C for 10 min, 90°C for 6 minutes and 95°C for 3 minutes. Finally, two quality criteria were evaluated: Microbiological (mesophilic viable microorganisms) and enzymatic (pectinesterase), choosing the treatment of 90 °C for 6 minutes, which was subjected to physical and chemical tests. As a result, a loche squash dressing was obtained, preserving its initial organoleptic characteristics and achieving a safe product of good taste.

Design of Experiments

In many cases, when trying to improve the quality of products or processes, it is necessary to simultaneously optimize multiple responses. A classic approach is to apply the Design of Experiments (DOE), multiple regression models to estimate the relationship between the responses and the controllable factors; then, combine the different responses with a desirability function and finally the controllable factors are optimized. However, it may happen that the relationship between controllable factors and responses is too complex to estimate the relationship with these methodologies; for example, a highly nonlinear relationship. A proposed alternative approach is the use of artificial neural networks (ANN) to estimate response functions; in the event of having qualitative variables, they are processed with fuzzy logic (FL), and in the optimization phase genetic algorithms (GA) are used. An example of optimizing a process of multiple responses is presented to validate this proposal.

Enzymatic unhairing

free amino acids
This study evaluated the effect of using hydrolyzed solid waste from the enzymatic unhairing process in the tanning industry on the growth of maize seedlings. Solid waste from the process of enzymatic unhairing is made up of hair, whose chemical composition is keratin. These residues were subjected to an alkaline hydrolysis, under conditions of 0.50 grams of calcium hydroxide per gram of solid residue, 90°C,for eight hours and under constant stirring. The liquid phase of the hydrolyzed product was used to prepare the concentrations of 1, 4, 8, 12 and 16%, which was applied to maize seedlings as irrigation water. The analyzed variables: fresh leaf nitrogen, corn height and leaf length, showed a direct relationship with the concentrations evaluated, because the hydrolyzate contributes mainly nitrogen in the form of free amino acids, which positively stimulates the growth of plants. Furthermore, it was found that a 12% solid residue hydrolyzate treatment produced the best results in corn height, leaf length and in fresh leaf nitrogen, which were 51.34%, 39.83% and 37.68%, respectively, higher than the target, which was just drinking water. It can be concluded that the liquid residue of hydrolyzed keratin releases free amino acids n the plant, which is a nutrient and growth regulating factor.

In a market where the experience of senior consultants in the public sector is highly valued by the convenors, a small consulting company is unable to permanently retain professionals who know the methodology and are well qualified for tenders. Being this a constraining factor for company growth, Xperta thought it was necessary to shift its value curve in order to change its offer, be recognized in the market and thus achieve sustainability. A project using the Karagabi KMModel as a basis for modeling the knowledge management of the company was run. Basically, the model is a reference guide to build what is called “knowledge-oriented organizations” and has three main components: an implementation strategy, a library of knowledge models and an experience knowledge base. With development of the project a new line of business arose, which is now being offered to the market. It is based on a validated and operational model of knowledge management and innovation. Consulting services in knowledge management integrate products and processes obtained and generated across the various experiences of the company, and it is supported by a protocol that allows the adaptation of the Karagabi model to the current national context.

Transportation plays an important role in a society and understanding the travel behavior is crucial in order to provide a framework to planners and policymaker to shift toward more sustainable transportation mode. Capturing this behavior in university students have been the focus of attention in the past years. Developing countries has specific characteristics such rapid in traffic congestion, sprawl urban development, safety concerns and a high degree of informal transportation. This study was done in Lima, capital of Peru, and a survey was performed for freshmen and senior students at the San Ignacio de Loyola University. Factors relevant considered were time to commute, transportation mode awareness, safety and security. The findings clearly show the students’ preferences of the different modes clearly and provide insights regerding of transportation infrastructure needs, and potential possibilities to shift toward more sustainable modes.

Hydrodynamic interaction between suspended sediments and the transport of contaminants in open channel flow
Ingol, Eusebio

contaminants.
This paper presents a research about the interaction between suspended solids and the pollution transport in streams. It involves the study of the interaction between sediments, reactive chemical substance and stream, in which, the hydrodynamic processes are modeled including the advection, turbulent diffusion, sedimentation, and the effect of kinetics. The main concern is to know how suspended solids can influence in the pollutant concentrations and how they are able of absorbing part of the chemical substances, which generally follow decay processes (Revelli & Ridolfi, 2002). Mathematical models described in this document take account the advection, turbulent diffusion, and the exchange kinetics between the solid phase and dissolved phase.

Code obfuscation using pseudo-random number generators
Ofuscación de código utilizando generadores de números pseudoaleatorios

Obfuscation
pseudo-random
generator
We describe a novel method for malicious code obfuscation that uses code already present in systems: a pseudo-random number generator. This can also be seen as an antidisassembly and anti-debugging technique, depending on deploy- ment, because the actual code does not exist until run – it is generated dynamically by the pseudo-random number generator. A year’s worth of experiments are used to demonstrate that this technique is a viable code obfuscation option for a malicious adversary with access to large amounts of computing power.

extrusion.
This study focuses on the preparation of tapioca starch biodegradable polymer, processed by blends of starch modified with glycerine and water as plasticizers, by using roll mill and a single–screw extruder in the process. During extrusion, there is a series of variables to control namely: the barrel temperature profile, screw torque and screw rotation speed. Tensile test, Differential Scanning Calorimetric (DSC), Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA), Fourier Transformer Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and morphology were used in the process.

vehicle fleet.
This article presents the current conditions of Peruvian roads and traffic, consisting of a continuously increasing vehicle fleet without an effective unit replacement, and of a road system that grows slowly and with inadequate design imported from other realities that are not enough to satisfy the need of excellent/good road conditions, that last a long period of time, with minimal maintenance or rehabilitation throughout the country. Initial individual efforts have been taken, but they are uncoordinated, trying to import the new knowledge from the US and other countries, but we are still in need of an entity that guides us through this process and effort. This article proposes four steps that have to be implemented to guide the effort of improving Peruvian roads and pavements in the right direction.

Applying Life Cycle Analysis as a Tool for sustainability
Poggi, Johanna
Environmental management
social responsibility
eco efficiency.
The present article analyzes how environmental responsibility is applied in the business world, and the problem of using corrective actions instead of strategies. This article emphasizes the use of Life Cycle Analysis as a tool to accomplish eco efficiency. It is hoped that companies change the way they manage their resources along the whole value chain, looking for sustainability. It is necessary to highlight that environmental management is tied to social responsibility, as long as it moves away from the traditional and philanthropic vision.

Lyophilization: science or art?
La liofilización: ¿ciencia o arte?
Liofilização: ciência ou arte?

Liofilização
Lyophilization
Freeze-drying
The freeze-drying (lyophilization) process is defined as a stabilizing process in which a substance is first frozen and then the quantity of the solvent (generally water) is reduced, first by sublimation and then desorption to values that will no longer support bilological activity or chemical reactions. Freeze-drying has been used for several decades on an industrial scale for the stabilization of numerous products, many of which are of biological origin. Although alternative methods are available for this purpose, freeze-drying often remains the method of choice for the dehydration of pharmaceuticals, vaccines, diagnostics and biotechnology products, due to the advantages it can offer in terms of thermal stability and retention of activity, both during the process itself and during subsequent storage of the freeze-dried product. In spite of its extended use, many misunderstandings still surrounded the process, besides the conviction that the freeze-drying is a simple technique that can be applied to any product that request drying. Perhaps the most general mistake made regarding the lyophilization process is its treatment as an art rather than a science.

π - Smart Containers.
Logistics is a concept that is the subject of much interest due to the strategic impact for businesses. Efficient logistics will not only generate savings and higher returns but will also have a positive impact on the environment. This article focuses on a main component of logistics such as packaging of products and the use of π - Smart Containers proposed by the Physical Internet Initiative is evaluated as an alternative in developing countries. This document describes the benefits of smart containers, but especially it analyzes its main aspects regarding container modularity, technology adoption, and complexity of the logistics network. The expected result is that the integration of forward and reverse logistics is complex but these smart containers could be an interesting possibility to consider in Latin American countries, especially due to the fact that it might allow better resource directionality for infrastructure investment. The findings may be useful in providing insights when the concept of reverse logistics is incorporated into the Physical Internet Initiative.

Water footprint
water management
Peru
According to the Atlas of Arid Zones (2010), water covers 70% of the surface of the planet, and only 2,5% of this total is fresh water, and the Andean zone has 95% of tropical glaciers of the world, but most of them are experiencing a worrying retreat, which will affect the availability of this resource in the next years if it is not used adequately. The water footprint is a biophysical indicator that measures the total volume of fresh water consumed by a specific studied unit, (Hoekstra, 2003) that is an individual, a crop, a geographically defined area, or a country and a region, and belongs to a group of indicators proposed bythe Ecological Economics. In this regard, the study is aimed at showing the water footprint state of the art in Peru, indicator that could be an important instrument for the adequate water management, mainly in ecosystems that can face water shortage due to climate change, and the possibilities and advantages to develop the above-mentioned indicator.

The Peruvian Beaches Ecological Organization - ECOPLAYAS, within the framework of its research program that includes university student volunteerism, described the ecological marine richness of the Paracas Bay during summer 2011 in order to collaborate with the management of this protected natural area and to obtain more scientific knowledge of the coastal marine ecology of the country. This article is based on such research. The Paracas Bay located in the National Reserve of Paracas (provinces of Pisco and Ica, Peru), is a strictly protected natural marine area. The research was aimed at knowing the biodiversity, identifying the ecological areas of greater importance and dealing with threatens resulting from the human activities recorded. The methodology comprises the study of the applicable bibliography and the in-situ research through diving and count of nautical activities. The results have shown a specific richness of 146 species. Among them, 10 species are protected nationwide and/or worldwide. In addition, inside the Bay, there were sectors with great richness of species but were impacted by human activities although they are strictly protected areas. This research allowed the identification of the main ecological challenges: Conservation of aquatic birds and green sea turtles and the characterization of the areas of great vulnerability that need to be protected.

Comportamento e Modelação do Aço
Comportamento e Modelação do Aço
da Silva Abambres, Miguel
Aço carbono
Aço inoxidável
Comportamento material
Material elasto-plástico
Endurecimento
Leis constitutivas uniaxiais

In Peru there is an unmet demand with respect to the municipal solid waste collection service in urban areas, where most of the solid wastes not collected are burned, used as pig food, thrown into rivers, etc. These situations cause environmental and health problems. Improving the collection system and solid waste treatment is an alternative to the solid waste problem. Given the characteristics of Lima, formal recyclers are considered as strategic allies to improve the solid waste collection system. The formalization of recyclers has improved their income, considering that the informal recyclers have low incomes, which does not allow them to improve their quality of life in many aspects. According to the collected and analyzed information of the recyclers´ income when they were informal, their income increased when they become formal.

The agricultural sector is highly vulnerable, since it is exposed to changing climate conditions and since it is an open system. The agricultural producers of the province of Morropón in Piura, which is a province where the agriculture is an important activity, have been affected by the changing climate conditions, and the commercial agriculture development of this province could be threatened if these vulnerabilities are not identified. We consider that this analysis can contribute to identifying the climate change adaptation measures that reduce the vulnerability of the agricultural activity in the province of Morropón.

Coffee organic production has an important role in Peruvian economics. There are many organic products that are applied in coffee plantations, with unknown effects. Therefore, a test was conducted to determine the effect of organic products applied to a var coffee substrate, Caturra Roja in a Chanchamayo (Junín, Peru). Organic fertilizers studied were Aminovigor, Fertiprotec, Fertigigas Plus, Lacto Fer and Alopes Forte. Results indicated that there were statistic differences only for plant stem diameter, fresh weight, dry weight, and Dixon Quality Index (DQI). For plant stem diameter, the treatments with Aminovigor (5 ml/l), Aminovigor (10 ml/l) and Fertigigas Plus (20 ml/l) were statistically different from the control. Regarding fresh weight, treatments with Aminovigor (10 ml/l) and Fertigigas Plus (20 ml/l) had the highest values of 6.54 g and 6.67 g, respectively. The highest value (2.65 g) for dry weight was obtained with Aminovigor (10 ml/l). Treatments with Aminovigor (10 ml/l) had the highest DQI value (0.33). In general, in these treatments we only found some statistically differences, except in those mentioned above and therefore the possibility of future research is open.
